Expanding my Horizons

Posted by ColinsCreations - August 3rd, 2021

I'm thinking about drawing some disgaea characters to simplify my sketching style a bit more. It takes me too long to sketch a page unless I either knuckle down and focus (which is hard since my brain is easily distracted and mother asks me to help her out from time to time), or tone down my style a little. But I also intend to expand my style a bit more, I got some How to Draws for superheroes last week, and I have been watching Batman's old cartoons, maybe combine eastern style with the old western cartoon style after simplifying my style. What are your thoughts on this though, I wanna read your opinions.

I suppose it depends if you prioritise form or function the most.
If the characters you draw are a vessel for the visuals, and just want your audience to enjoy all of the shapes and colors and all that good stuff. Then go nuts on the details and designs (like going all Kingdom Hearts on it, with crazy amounts of beltbuckles or other styling details).

If you want the viewer to pay more attention to what the characters are actually doing, all of the story and action and stuff. Then extra details are more of a distraction for the viewers, and a waste of effort on the creator's side.

Both are valid choices, but there's plenty of middleground to comprimise on.
